Shamanic people through their astute skills of observation associate specific plants with the animals observed browsing them or using them in specific ways. There are many plants associated with deer that include plants that they browse or use to heal themselves. Deer medicine comes up frequently in the Compendium. Deer are attributed with teaching us what to eat and use as medicine, as are other animals, mainly because these animals use them themselves or eat them or there is something unique in their behavior with specific plants. There is a ton of material on animal medicine in Ancestral Airs.

Everything found in Essays and other places on this site are shortened versions of the vast array of material found in Ancestral Airs. There you will find every individual concept interwoven into the complex and mysterious world of our shamanic, hunter-gatherer ancestors.

That is a lovely story. Have you ever seen the pictures of the Buddhist moss garden in Japan? The garden is hundreds of years old and the monks cultivate hundreds of species. I don't think there is any place like it on Earth except perhaps some hidden canyon in some remote place. Moss is highly significant in hunter-gatherer life, regarded as a sacred link to comfort and abundance as well as a habitat for benevolent Earth spirits. Pure magic in any realm.

I have always admired the beauty of moss. My son also thinks the mossy patches in the woods on our land are one of the best places to be. He gave his daughter the middle name , Moss, when she was born.

Thank you, Verda. What impresses me the most is the complete understanding and acceptance of the equality in roles. Each gender had their assigned areas and collaboration was inherent in the social fabric of the community. And it seems that nothing was consider lesser or greater than. A great contrast to the hierarchical ways of our current culture.

Absolutely. Habitat destruction is destroying our Earth and everything that exists within its embrace. I think that the issue about global warming, while thought a natural occurance, is the exceleration prompted by our disregard for the obvious. If more protracted, creatures would have a better shot at adaptation. That isn't happening and species are succumbing all over this planet because of these things and others such as over-harvesting and toxins. Each and every one of us can help by creating bio diverse gardens even if the only space available to do so is a small deck or balcony. ..hence this blog, designed to introduce people who lack the experience to something that is quite easy to accomplish. Thank you for your terrific comment.
