Part II: Sowing Calendar

This is Part II of the sowing calendar. It is a schedule, based on May 15 as a last frost date, for sowing seeds directly outside rather than growing starts under lights several months earlier.

APRIL 15: Pea, Spinach, Lettuce, Onion Sets, and Seed Potatoes

MAY 1: Beet, Carrot, Radish, and Chard

MAY 15: Beans, Corn, and Squash

JUNE 1: Cucumber and Melon

JULY 15: Lettuce, Spinach, Greens and Bunching Onion

AUGUST 1: Carrots and Peas

AUGUST 15: Beet, Lettuce, Spinach, and Greens

SEPTEMBER 1: Lettuce and Spinach

SEPTEMBER 15: Radish and Garlic Bulbs

*Note that the following list should be planted every two weeks in small amounts: Spinach, Lettuce, Beet, Carrot, Radish, Bush Beans, and Peas. It is recommended that two varieties of peas that have two different maturation dates be selected and planted together. This simple process extends the season too.

*Note also that Onion Sets and Seed Potatoes cost more than seed but offer the convenience of having been started for you.

*Sweet Potatoes and Horseradish are always bought as plants.
